Read This And You’ll Think Twice Before Sitting On That Chair Again.
Right now you are probably sitting down to read this article ,and might spend some time going through it. Well that’s okay! But the longer you stay inactive the more agitated your body becomes.
Our body has got splendid ways of informing us that it is done sitting.
Well guess what! These ways are insidious and should be immediately acknowledged before they get you into serious trouble.
By serious trouble, I mean
- coronary heart disease
- type 2 diabetes,
- breast and colon cancers
- Shortened Life Expectancy
Yes!Who would’ve thought something as normal as sitting down can get you into such kind of distress.
We practically spend half of our lives sitting down, right from our childhood be it elementary school, high school ,college or the “infamous cubicle” the graph of sitting down has been indicating an exponential rise ever since.
Let’s start from the very ground level, just take a look at your body posture ,our unique physical structure helps us to stand straight against the force of gravity. This unique structure enables us to perform a wide array of movements.
If you are person who loves numbers, here are some stats that would definitely get you off that chair.
A research carried out by the American Cancer Society which examined 123,216 people’s health outcomes during a 14 year period had some shocking revelations.
The results indicated in particular, women who sit for more than six hours a day were about 40% more likely to die during the course of the study than those who sat fewer than three hours/day.
Men were about 20% more likely to die.
As students, most of the time you probably sit down to use your brain, to complete an assignment/project but ironically lengthy periods of sitting run counter to this goal.
Being stationary(no movement), reduces blood flow and the amount of oxygen entering your blood stream through your lungs reduces drastically.
These two things are your brain’s primal appetite to function properly!
Guess what is going to happen if it doesn’t get the proper food to function?
You guessed it right ,All sitting and no movement makes jack’s Brain a dumb Brain.
Enough of the Horror , Tell us what do we do?What is the solution ?
To begin with ,
Generally we tend to sit, with a curved back and slumped shoulders. This posture tends to put pressure on our spine.Eventually it causes wear and tear in our spinal discs.
This hunched shape also shrinks your chests cavity while you sit ,meaning your lungs have less space to expand when you breathe.
That’s a major concern because it temporarily limits the amount of oxygen that fills your lungs.Eventually making you feel uneasy.
According to a study conducted at Department of Physical Therapy and Human Movement Sciences, Northwestern University, Chicago, IL, USA on using appropriate postures for sitting down.
The best measure to take in order to tackle the hazards of prolonged sitting is to adopt to WO-BPS posture.
What is WO-BPS?
It’s a posture where you sit down on the chair against the back part of the seat without ischial support.
Some of the other measures that you should take in order to ensure a healthy back are as follows:
- Rather than sleeping on a bed ,start sleeping on a wooden floor : As you lay down your spine tends to strengthen and lengthen, you get a complete feeling of relaxation in your lower back and throughout your spine. (Trust Me,Go Ahead Try it!)
- Stretching: Try out normal stretching after regular intervals,it relaxes the muscles and ensures smooth blood flow.
- Healthy Spine: Make sure you visit a chiropractor regularly,Even Tiger Woods visits his chiropractor regularly.
- Weight: If you have fat accumulated across your abdomen then it is a major concern because your body has to take extra efforts to stay upright.Leg lifting can help you tighten stomach muscles.
I found the following chair to be quite useful, the makers guarantee a comfortable sitting experience and claim that these chairs are especially designed for perfect sitting postures.
A GOOD CHAIR TO PURCHASE:
To be honest with you, after carrying out an intensive research for almost 8 hours on “sitting and it’s terrifying hazards” I have realized that sitting is here to stay, majority of our work involves the use of computers, there’s no denial to it.
But like they say,”The extra-mile is never crowded”.
We have to take major steps to break out of this routine. In order to ensure good health and an elongated life span.
As this article is coming to an end ,I urge you to get up and gift your body a good walk. I’m sure you’ll feel wonderful and your body will thank you at a later point in time.
Stay Fit.Stay Awesome.
